Daytona Beach consumers are cutting back on many things. Eating out
is down. Movie attendance is down. Consumer spending is down across
the board. Gun sales though are shooting holes in the downturn.
Nationwide sales of firearms and ammunition are up 8 to 10
percent.
Regardless if you are if you are carrying or if you are a
want-to-be, there are resources throughout Volusia County to make
you safe and proficient and to make you legal.
Top Things for Daytona Beach Gun Toters to Know
Be Legal Buying
When you purchase your gun the authorized dealer will take some
basic information and send the information to the State of Florida
to do a background check. Not that this makes a whole lot of sense.
If a person knows that they do not meet the criteria for a legal
purchase they are probably buying them off the street. Wouldn't
it be better to sell them through authorized dealers so the weapons
are at least registered to the people most likely to use them
unlawfully?
Be Legal Concealed
Now that you legally own your weapon of choice, you can have it in
several places but not all. If you want to carry it on your person
you need a concealed gun permit from the State of Florida. You need
to go through a class for about eight hours, send an application in
with payment and wait for around eight weeks. We won't bother
to again state the obvious that only law abiding citizens do
this.
The class that you go to is awful. Boring and filled with much
political rhetoric on the NRA and right to bear arms. Why they
subject people that obviously already believe in the Second
Amendment makes no sense. Following the lecture, you will go to the
gun range. Don't worry about failing this part. The guns that
you will use are long barrel and the targets are close.
Be Good
Just because you own something does not mean you own the skills to
use it. Take the time to shoot at a gun range on a regular basis.
There are two places in the area for you to take your best
shot.
Strickland Gun Range is a 10-acre parcel was donated by
Consolidated Tomoka Land Company to Volusia County. It is extremely
well run and maintained. There is a fee of $5 per day for use.
There are also annual passes available. The range is located at
1180 Indian Lake Rd. in Daytona Beach.(386) 226-0477. Open Tuesday
through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Hot Shot Indoor Shooting Range has the convenience of being
centrally located and the benefit of being out of the weather. The
problem is that the ventilation is poor so expect to breath gun
smoke while shooting. If you can get beyond the gun powder in the
air, there are some nice services offered. They rent guns for use
in the range. This is great if you want to get the feel of
different types of guns before you buy. Hot Shot also offers
lessons and gun sales through the pawn shop on site. When you begin
carrying a gun, you will be amazed to find out how many others are
also armed. Regardless on social status, profession or where they
are, your neighbors and co-workers in Daytona Beach are probably
carrying.
