"People want to come downtown. They just need a reason.", proclaims Doug Kosarek, host of the Coliseum's Daytona's Got Talent. The Coliseum, located on Beach Street, is giving downtown a needed boost by fostering a growing original music scene staged as a talent show.

This talent show is less American Idol and more Battle Of The Bands. There are 3-5 bands per night and all the bands play for free. "We try and do local bands but we'll do one out of town band per week if they have potential," says Kosarek. Each night a winner is declared by audience reaction. Weekly winners move onto a monthly competition and the monthly winners graduate to an end-of-year super showcase. The bands are responsible for bringing part of the steadily growing crowd. The more people they bring, the more likely they are to win. Music industry executives have already been spotted at the shows and, although you're likely to hear some cover songs, the price of admission for the musicians is Original Music.

Doug explains, "A lot of these musicians get paid very well to play bars during the weekend, but the bars don't let them play their original stuff. This talent show evolved out of the Bandshell live. There have been 3 Daytona's Got Talent shows, but a lot of these acts have performed for us at one time or another."

Just because these are local bands, don't assume they aren't as interesting as the bands from outside our area. They've actually had 2 acts that have participated with Daytona's Got Talent hit the top 40 this year and several more with record deals.

The Ambiance
If you haven't been to the Coliseum, it's really a unique place. First off, it's gorgeous. Not just your vanilla concert hall with an open floor space. It's got couches! Lot's of them. And they're the big, cushy, sink-into-it kind of couches. Like many of you, I've been to a lot of concerts, large and small. I can't remember a single time I've been able to see a show on a big, professional stage and be as comfortable as I would be in my own living room. It's really a great night out. We encourage everybody to check it out, come back to DaytonaToday and let us know what you think.

The Coliseum is located at 176 N. Beach St.
Daytona's Got Talent is held every Thursday night at 7pm.
The show is open to everyone 18 and over and admission is $10.

10 bucks is a little steep for local bands! I say 3 - 5 bucks for under 21 and free for over 21. I suppose then they would jack up drink prices...

Hey, Danny. How long has it been? I say at least 3 bucks for locals and under 21 and 5 bucks for non-locals over 21. That way everyone wins. Maybe even the bands, too.

I can see your point, but they're really not even making any money yet. I think they're breaking even...maybe a bit more, but nothing to write home about. It's still a great time and the drinks are regular priced bar drinks.
